What is really happening with the semantic web? How will it affect teaching and learning?

I have been writing an outline for a teaching Community of Practice.  I wanted teachers to be able to specify things they wanted to learn more about or learning goals and then have these match to either people or content that may help them achieve their goals.  As I was researching I found lots of little pieces of information, ideas, possible futures but not examples of explanations of how it might work.

I ‘m not sure I fully understand how this may affect teaching and learning either.  Is there a possibility that we will need to become little machines producing lots and lots of content of various types and qualities so that there will be the greatest chance of beating the ‘odds’ and finding what we’re looking for.  Or will the little voices get drowned out by those with the greatest number of connections.

I myself use Zemanta for blogging it helps me find articles of use.  I  find it very useful, I still research in other ways but sometimes it comes up with something surprisingly useful.  I found this tool in my never ending search for how people really use community, how do you set your expectations about how much you should know and when and who can help you find out.
So this is really an information gathering exercise.  Are we scared, excited, impatient or indifferent to technology advances in this area???
